New Delhi: Clearly stating the stand that medical investigation reports including pathology lab reports, X-Ray Reports as well as ECG reports cannot be signed by technicians including paramedical professionals registered with the paramedical council. The same reports cannot be released by technicians the RTI response has stated

The state medical council was responding to an RTI filed by Dr Prasad Kulkarni, Member Executive Council, Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM) on the matter

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the Supreme court order on the issue of "Who Can Sign Lab reports?", where the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court order that stated that “Laboratory Report can be countersigned only by a registered medical practitioner with a post-graduate qualification in pathology”

The same decision of the Supreme Court was upheld by the Medical Council of India as well.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues team, Dr Kulkarni informed that despite this, technicians continue to run pathology labs and providing reports to patients.

"After the Supreme Court order, we submitted our memorandum to all collectors Maharashtra to take action against illegal path labs as per Supreme court order. At that time Paramedical council in Maharashtra claimed that Supreme court order is not applicable to our state. But clearly, with this information, their claims are proven wrong." he said

The RTI asks straightforward questions to the which following answers were given by the council. The RTI response clearly specify that a Paramedical Council registered Individual CANNOT run pathology/Clinical/Paraclinical laboratories and release pathology Lab reports without the supervision of a registered Medical practitioner with post-graduation Qualification in Pathology
