New Delhi: Professor (Dr.) VK Bahl has been appointed Dean (Academic) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is the Head of Cardiology and Center Chief of Cardio-thoracic Center at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
Born in 1955, Prof V.K. Bahl graduated from MLN Medical College, University of Allahabad and completed his DM training from, G. B. Pant Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. He joined AIIMS as faculty and went on to become one of the most erudite, distinguished and respected professors of this institute. He is a complete balanced clinical cardiologist and researcher but interventional cardiology remains his first love. He is the one of the Course Directors of India Live- – National Course on Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions.
He was a Commonwealth Scholar in 1989/90, Senior Research Associate for Electrophysiology at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, USA in the year 1994 and WHO Short-Term Consultant for teaching and training of Cardiologists at North Korea in 1998.
Dr Bahl's contributions to cardiology community are immense. He is past Editor of Indian Heart Journal, advisor to Journal of American College of Cardiology (2015-16) and currently serves as its Emeritus Editor. He has served as Hony. Secretary of CSI Delhi Branch, Past President of National CSI and Advisor, Academic Committee of CSI. He was nominated Member, National Academy of Medical Science and to Advisory Board of Asian Pacific Heart Association. Dr Bahl sits on several National Regulatory Bodies and is National Co-ordinator and Principal Investigator of several drug and device based multinational trials .He has immense contribution to establishment of Heart House in Delhi.
Dr Bahl is a pioneer in Cardiology with many firsts to his credit. He has undertaken many complex cardiac interventions for the first time in India- retrograde BMV, multi-valvular interventions, leadless pacemaker to name a few.
He has numerous awards to his creditincluding “AmrutModyUnichem Prize” by Indian Council of Medical Research, ‘Searl Award” and “DP Basu Award” by Cardiological Society of India, Couer de’ Or Award for philanthropic work in cardiology (2008), Life Time Achievement Award for contribution in preventive cardiology by WCCPGC, New Delhi, National Best Medical Award by Netrik Manav SamajUthan Sewa Samiti ( 2011), Best Cardiologist Award by Zee TV(2015), and “Legends of Cardiology” Award by Times Group (2017) and “Life time achievement Award “ by CSI (Delhi) to just name a very few.
He has delivered numerous lectures and orations at various national and international scientific meetings of repute. Dr Bahl has more than 300 publications in National and International journals to his credit. He has contributed 2 chapters in recent edition of Hurst Text Book of Cardiology. Generations of cardiologists have benefitted from his teaching and equally impressive attitude for patient care over the last 35 years. Dr VK Bahl embodies the finest qualities of a sincere teacher, an honest researcher, an astute administrator and a visionary, who is not willing to compromise on the quality of medical education and patient care.
A Program for Free Cardiac Procedures has been an important milestone for him. In this unique service, all patients who present to AIIMS with an acute heart attack or those requiring pacemakers due to heart blocks or valve dilation for blocked mitral valves are offered totally free treatment. This is the only department in the country that is offering these life saving Heart Procedures for free to all patients in the country irrespective of their socioeconomic status.
