Punjab: 72 year old woman delivers baby boy through IVF

Chandigarh: A 72-year-old woman has delivered a baby after 46 years of her marriage at a Hisar-based fertility centre.

The couple -- Mohinder Singh Gill (79) and his wife Daljinder Kaur -- were childless and decided to have a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) three years ago.

"They (couple) came to us three years ago as they did not have a child even after several years of their marriage," Dr Anurag Bishnoi, owner of National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Centre said.

"The first two attempts failed. But Daljinder conceived in third attempt last year," he told over phone.

"The baby boy and mother are healthy," he said.

In IVF technique, eggs are collected from the woman's ovaries and then fertilised by husband's processed sperms in a test tube in a controlled laboratory environment. The resulting embryos are then deposited into the women's uterus.

Bishnoi said this is the second case in which a woman over 70 years of age has become a mother at the centre.Earlier, Rajo Devi, a resident of Jind district in Haryana, had become mother through IVF at the age of 70 years in 2008.
