Raigarh: Raigarh Government Medical College (GMC) which has been operating for nearly ten years is facing a severe staffing shortage. The college plans to fill approximately 200 positions, including Professor, Assistant Professor, Junior, and Senior Resident Doctor positions, of which 80 are currently vacant. According to sources at the college, more than 55% of the positions across the entire institution are currently unfilled.

The deficiencies in faculty across various departments revealed that all positions, including Professors, Senior Residents (SR), and Junior Residents (JR), are vacant. This shortage of medical staff including a lack of professors, MDs, and specialists both the UG and PG students are unable to study properly.

At the medical college, PG studies are being conducted in various fields including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, ENT, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Anaesthesia, and Pathology. However, due to a lack of faculty, the PG studies are under strain. Efforts are underway to start General Surgery in PG courses this year.

In response to the ongoing staffing crisis, the Director of Medical Education (DME) has sought information about vacant posts and staffing setups from all the medical colleges of the state including Raigarh Medical College. The aim is to solve the staffing issue soon and fill all the vacancies. The information gathered by the DME highlights that the medical college of the city has been struggling with the lack of faculty for a long time. Despite walk-in interviews being conducted periodically to address the issue, reports suggest that senior residents are showing little interest in filling junior resident positions.

Vacancies are expected to be filled in the coming days, with assistant professors and professors likely to be appointed to the vacant posts at medical colleges. The staffing shortage has also led to serious challenges for patients seeking treatment at the medical college’s hospital. The recruitment is expected to have a broader impact on both the quality of medical education and healthcare services at the institution.
