Bengaluru : Sakra World Hospital Hosts a Talent Show by Joint Replacement Patients to create Osteoarthritis Awareness

Bengaluru : Sakra World Hospital organised a talent show by joint replacement patients to create an awareness among the masses on how to deal with life even with Osteoarthritis at Taj Gateway, Bengaluru. Osteoarthritis affects over 15 million adults in India every year where one in two of them develops symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. It has been predicted that India might become the capital of Osteoarthritis by the year 2025 with over 60 million people cases.  In the recent times, people between the age of 30-50 are also falling prey to this condition which was earlier noticed only among people older than 60 years.


Patients from diverse backgrounds came forth and displayed their talents in the Talent Show organised by Sakra World Hospital, aiming to bring Awarenss about Osteoarthritis.  The common thread in all of the patients is their past suffering with the debilitating condition of Osteoarthrits, who now have started life afresh post the joint replacement surgery. An array of talent was displayed ranging from dance, yoga, singing, poetry etc.  The popular Sandalwood actor Mr. Ramesh Arvindgraced the event to encourage the patients and inspired them to achieve more& lead a normal life.

Osteoarthritis has a serious impact on the lifestyle of the person, since it can lead to complete disabilty of the knee.  If left untreated it could result the person being bed ridden in the long run.  The common risk factors include obesity, increasing age, previous joint injury, overuse of joints and genes.  Traditionally, the first step of treatment was to administer the patient with  pain killers to relive the pain temporarily.  If the pain didn’t  not relieved even post medication and physiotherapy the only option was to undergo Joint Replacement Surgery.  It is estimated that only 10% of Indians undergo TKR procedure due to the fear of late recovery and post recovery pain. But with the new innovation of small incision computer Navigated knee replacement recovery is fast,minimal pain and minimal blood loss and more accurrate as navigation gives perfection to millimeter while surgery. The talent show by the joint replacement patients aim to showcase the life after joint replacement surgery which has given them a new lease of life.
