Chandigarh: In a detailed project report submitted to the central government, the Chandigarh Health Department has sought to establish a new undergraduate medical college with 100 MBBS seats in the Union Territory (UT).
The project entails the medical college be associated with the 500-bed Government multi-speciality Hospital, Sector 16, with a total of 100 MBBS seats, permission for which is due to be granted by the Ministry of Health and family welfare.
As apart of the fresh project introduced, for the construction of the college's academic block, libraries and hostels, the health department seeks additional lands of 10 kilometers of the Sector 16, Government Multi-specialty Hospital.
The hospital covers a total area of over 12 acres of the sector which is to be a part of the proposed medical college.
As per reports, about 13 acres have already been set aside by the UT Administration in the outskirts of the city in Sarangpur.
According to a Senior Health Department official in a Hindustan Times report, the process for affiliation of the proposed medical college have begun and the requisite documents have already been submitted to Panjab University.
The official also said, " Panjab University has also been apprised with the status of the proposal that has been sent to the central government and also the fulfilment of mandatory land requirement clause for medical colleges. A letter to the registrar along with the consent of application form has been submitted for stating the process at the university's end."
Stating that for certain department, which form an integral part of the MBBS Course, but have not been established as GSMH, faculty will be roped in until the new college becomes fully-functional, UT Health Secretary Arun Gupta gave some particulars in his statement to the Hindustan Times.
Another official added that it shall prove to be helpful for the initial stages, as cadre of senior members based on their experience will appointed as faculty for certain departments.
Currently, the hospital is already offering Diplomate National Programmes in five specialties, the report adds.
At present, the city of Chandigarh presently only has 150 MBBS Seats and 125 seats in postgraduate programmes offered by Government Medical College and Hospital, sector 32. In addition to this around 310 seats are available in postgraduate programmes at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research.
