23 ragging complaints from Gujarat medical colleges since 2022

Ahmedabad: Amid rising concerns over ragging in educational institutions, Gujarat has recorded 86 ragging complaints between 2022 and 2026, with 23 cases reported from medical colleges, accounting for more than 26 percent of the total cases reported in the state.

The figures were shared by Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Dr Parthivraj Singh Kathwadia, who cited data from the University Grants Commission (UGC) website.

According to the data, Gujarat recorded 105 ragging complaints between 2012 and 2022, while 86 complaints were reported in just the next four years, highlighting the continuing concern over ragging in the state.

Kathwadia raised the issue following the alleged ragging-related suicide of a postgraduate medical student at Government Medical College (GMC), Surat. Following the incident, four senior doctors were suspended, while four faculty members were issued show-cause notices over alleged inaction on complaints of harassment.

He also cited the State of Ragging in India 2022-2024 report, which recorded 3,156 ragging complaints across 1,946 colleges during the period. The report also recorded 51 student deaths linked to ragging, including 23 medical students.

As per latest media report by Ahmedabad Mirror, Kathwadia said that medical students accounted for 45.1% of all ragging-related student deaths during the period. He further said that medical students made up 38.6% of the reported ragging complaints in the country, despite accounting for only around 1.1% of the total student population.

In Gujarat, two ragging cases were reportedly recorded at BJ Medical College in 2026. One case each was reported at Government Medical College, Bhavnagar; GMERS Medical College, Himmatnagar; GMERS Medical College, Gandhinagar; Government Dental College, Jamnagar; and Dental College, Visnagar.

He demanded FIRs within 24 hours of ragging complaints, separate hostels for junior students, anonymous complaint mechanisms and stronger action by anti-ragging committees. He said institutions needed to demonstrate “strong will and exemplary action” to curb ragging.

Medical Dialogues had reported in June 2026 that a total of three second year postgrduate medico from the orthopaedic department of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad were suspended after being found guilty of allegedly ragging first-year PG students.

Recently, following the suspension of four senior doctors over allegations of ragging and mental harassment of a first-year MD Microbiology medico who later died by suicide, the administration of Government Medical College (GMC), Surat, now issued show-cause notices to four faculty members for alleged inaction.

Confirming the development, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Panseriya said in a statement that show-cause notices had been issued to four faculty members, including the Head of the Microbiology Department, for “failing to prevent such an incident."
