Hamirpur: The Himachal Pradesh government is considering increasing the internship stipend for MBBS students, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stating that the necessary budgetary provisions will be made for the proposed hike.

During the interaction, students asked how to improve medical education and infrastructure at the Government Medical College, Hamirpur, and make it a leading medical institution.
When another student asked about measures to improve safety and infrastructure at the college, Sukhu responded about plans to build a modern amphitheatre, an auditorium, and a library. Additionally, separate hostels for boys and girls, each with a capacity of 300 students, are also being built.
He said that the layout plan for Government Medical College, Hamirpur, has been prepared with the assistance of a Japanese company. Plans are also underway to establish a super-speciality block, a cancer hospital, a dental college and a nursing college at the institution in the future. Research activities will also be encouraged at the college.
Sukhu mentioned that the selection process for 10 postgraduate and 10 MBBS students from each of the state’s medical colleges is nearly complete. These selected students will soon be sent abroad to study best practices in the medical field.
Medical Dialogues had reported that medical interns in Maharashtra have asked the state government to raise the monthly stipend from Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. The interns, who have completed their MBBS degree and are currently undergoing Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) in government and affiliated medical colleges across Maharashtra, have been raising concerns over the current stipend for the past two months, citing the rising cost of living, accommodation, transportation, food and other daily expenses.
