Karnataka: 2 medical colleges to come up at Ramanagara, Kanakapura
Bengaluru: In a significant development for medical education in Karnataka, the state is poised to welcome two new government medical colleges for the upcoming academic year.
The proposed Ramanagara Institute of Medical Sciences and Kanakapura Institute of Medical Sciences, both located within a two-hour drive from Bengaluru, are expected to enhance access to quality healthcare education in the region.
As per a recent media report by Times of India, the two new medical colleges are designed to have a capacity of 150 seats each, contributing to the expansion of medical education opportunities in Karnataka. While the establishment of these two institutions marks a positive step towards improving the healthcare infrastructure in Karnataka, there was an additional proposal for a medical college in Kunigal, situated in the Tumakuru district. The proposed college is supposed to be developed on a public-private partnership model.
Authorities decided to come up with two new medical colleges right after the National Medical Commission's (NMC) decision to defer its initial proposal, which aimed to limit the establishment of new medical colleges based on population density. In October, the NMC had proposed that the number of medical seats should be 100 for every 10 lakh population, reports the daily. However, facing opposition from several states, including Karnataka, the NMC recently decided to withhold this decision until the next academic year. The NMC has marked November 26 as the deadline for medical colleges to submit applications for new colleges or increase in seat number.
RGUHS launched the application portal, with a deadline of November 22 for new colleges to apply. On November 23, the local inquiry committee convened. On November 24, there were meetings of the academic council committee and syndicate. Following the issuance of the Essentiality and Feasibility Certificates, the university gave the government its approval for affiliation.
The government is all set to send the required application to NMC. "The Syndicate has approved two new colleges in the state -- one at Ramanagara and another at Kanakapura. One at Ramanagara will be on RGUHS campus," said RGUHS VC MK Ramesh. Dr HJ Jaikrishna, a syndicate member, said: "This is also a step towards the realisation of the long-cherished dream of a campus for RGUHS. The place will also develop with the medical college coming into existence."
