Medical Student Allegedly Gangraped in Mysuru, Police launches probe

Mysuru: In a shocking incident, a medical student, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly gang-raped in the outskirts of Mysuru, near Lalitadripura by few unidentified people.

The student, who was pursuing her medical education in a private medical college in Mysuru was riding pillion with her male friend when the incident took place.

PTI reports that a few people waylaid them on Thursday when they were on their way to Chamundi Hills. The gang initially demanded money, but when they found nothing, attacked her friend and dragged her to a place where they committed the crime, police said.

Both were rushed to a private hospital sometime between 1 am and 1.30 am. The rape victim was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, adds UNI.

Based on the complaint of the medico, a case of gang rape has been registered against unknown people, police added.

The Mysuru police commissioner Dr. Chandragupta visited the spot and formed multiple teams to probe the case.

Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai told reporters in Delhi that he has directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to initiate steps to nab the culprits.

"Based on the statement, a case has been registered. I have directed the DGP that whoever has perpetrated it, they should be identified and stringent action should be taken against them," Bommai said.

Terming the incident "unfortunate", Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday told ANI, "The girl was gang-raped and hospitalised, while the boy was beaten badly. It's an unfortunate incident. My government has taken it very seriously. The perpetrators will be caught soon and brought to justice."

State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said he has directed the police to conduct a thorough inquiry and take stern action.

Citing a preliminary report, he said four persons were involved in the crime.

The Minister said he would visit Mysuru on Thursday.

Meanwhile,The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday took cognizance of the rape case. The Commission has written to DGP Karnataka to make sure that all accused are identified and immediately arrested and charged under relevant sections of the law, adds ANI.
The state women's commission chairperson Prameela Naidu on Thursday lodged a complaint with the local police demanding harsh punishment in the incident.

Responding to media persons, she said the commission has taken note of the incident and lodged a complaint with the police.

After lodging the complaint, she rushed to the crime spot and collected information from the police for submitting a detailed report with the home ministry.
Speaking to reporters at the crime site, Prameela said the police are confident of arresting the accused by today evening or tomorrow. However, she could not meet the rape victim as she is in a state of shock. "Doctors also advised me not to meet her," she said.

Since the rape victim is in a state of shock, Prameela said the women's commission would pay all her medical bills and provide counseling to her. "I have spoken to the district legal cell to provide them necessary legal help also," she added.

According to Mysuru City, Commissioner of Police, Dr. Chandragupta, a girl student was allegedly gang-raped at Lalithadripura layout, Mysuru on August 24.
"A girl student was allegedly gang-raped at Lalithadripura layout, Mysuru on 24th August. As per the complaint, 6 men committed the crime and also beat the girl's friend. FIR lodged in Alanahally Police Station. We have formed teams for the investigation of the case," Chandragupta had said.
Informing about the girls' situation, the District in-charge minister of Mysuru ST Somashekar had said, "The girl is receiving medical treatment at a hospital, her condition is stable. On CM's orders, ADGP Pratap Reddy is also in Mysuru for investigation. Two DCPs also put on the case."
