ED Restitutes Rs 89.75 Lakh to complainants in Karakonam Medical College Scam
Kerala- On Monday, the regional office of the Enforcement Director (ED) refunded a total of Rs 89.75 lakh to six complainants in the Karakonam Medical College scam case. This is the first case in which the ED has given compensation.
According to a TOI media news report, the ED had issued a provisional order to confiscate Rs 95.25 lakh identified as proceeds of crime and a prosecution complaint was subsequently filed. Further, the victims filed a petition to the court for the reimbursement and the court also allowed it. However, the money is being handed over after the victims filed affidavits agreeing to return it in case the accused is acquitted. The complainants had paid the money to the accused in the pretext of getting admission to the MBBS course at Dr SMCSI Medical College.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that following reports of an alleged money laundering case at a Church of South India (CSI)-run medical institution at Karakonam, the Enforcement Directorate has conducted raids at multiple premises, including the headquarters, of the Church of South India (CSI) in Thiruvananthapuram and against the Church officials.
Meanwhile, five victims in the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank scam filed applications and the ED filed an NOC on it. On this, ED officials are planning to make the restitution through the bank and the court has been informed about it. The bank has not filed a plea and they are planning to approach the court seeking permission to hand over the attached property to the bank. Officials said that a second chargesheet will also be filed soon in the case.
Similar proceedings have also started in the Kandala Bank case and the bank has approached the court in this matter. In the Popular Finance case, four victims have filed a similar petition. Officials said that similarly, compensation proceedings have also started in the High Rich case, Kecheri Group case and Masters Finserv case, reported TOI.
