They are demanding that their monthly stipend should be increased from Rs 14,000 to Rs 30,000.
The interns gathered on the college campus and raised slogans, saying that students doing the same internship in different government medical colleges should receive equal stipends. According to them, the current system, where stipend amounts vary from one college to another, is unfair.
The protesting doctors said that the Rs 14,000 monthly stipend paid at SSM Medical College is not enough to meet basic expenses such as food, accommodation and transportation. They also claimed that despite charging one of the highest medical education fees in the state, the college offers one of the lowest internship stipends.

Dainik Jagran has reported that the interns said they have been raising the issue with the college administration and the state government for a long time, but no final decision has been taken. While they have received repeated assurances, they alleged that no concrete action has followed.
During the protest, representatives of the interns submitted a memorandum to the college administration. The authorities reportedly assured them that their demands would be forwarded to the state government for consideration.
The interns said they play an important role in patient care by working in different hospital departments during their internship. Considering their workload and responsibilities, they believe the current stipend is inadequate.
They maintained that their protest will continue until the state government announces a hike in the stipend and implements a "One Stipend" policy across all government medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh. The interns also warned that they would intensify their agitation if their demands are not addressed soon.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that MBBS interns from government medical colleges across Madhya Pradesh recently started an indefinite strike in July, 2026, demanding an increase in their monthly internship stipend from Rs 14,337 to Rs 30,000.
