After Durgapur MBBS student rape case, Nagpur's Medical college hospital bans entry of delivery agents inside campus hostels
Nagpur- In the wake of the recent brutal rape and assault of a second-year MBBS student of a private college in West Bengal, the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo) in Nagpur has recently banned the entry of delivery agents inside the hostel buildings on its campus.
In this regard, speaking to the TOI, Mayo Dean Dr Ravi Chavan said that no food delivery agents will now be allowed past the security checkpoint outside the hostel. Regular tiffin service providers will be accompanied by a guard who will deliver the food to the rooms of hostel residents. These measures are in addition to those taken following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trained doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.
He said, "We have also made a separate register for National Health Mission doctors. I have also authorised the MARD secretary and hostel in-charge to make decisions related to hostels on my behalf. The premises were already secured during the RG Kar episode”.
Meanwhile, GMCH dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye said the campus has been secured since last year. "We hired MSF guards and prohibited the entry of anyone inside the hostel buildings. All deliveries are done at the guard post outside the hostel," he told TOI.
Dr Gajbhiye added that side rooms for doctors are being renovated while many are already in place. "Female doctors are accompanied by women guards during night hours if they have to move between the hostel and wards. CCTV and lighting, too, are functioning well," he said.
Moreover, Dr Akshay Dongardive, president of FAIMA, strongly condemned the brutal gang rape of a second-year MBBS student near IQ City Medical College, Durgapur. He said, "This barbaric act, coming just a year after the rape and murder of Dr Abhaya from RG Kar Medical College, once again exposes the complete collapse of safety for medical students in West Bengal. The recent statement by the chief minister of West Bengal is deeply disappointing and insensitive. Such remarks only add to the pain of the medical fraternity instead of assuring justice. FAIMA demands the immediate arrest of all accused, strictest punishment, and accountability from the state administration. Doctors' safety is non-negotiable; we will not tolerate apathy or political posturing any longer. Justice must be swift, visible, and uncompromising”.
