Dr Chetna Nitil K appointed as new CMO of Thane Municipal Corporation
Thane: Dr Chetna Nitil K has been appointed as the new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The doctor has taken over the charge of the CMO on Monday and has been appointed for a period of one year.
The post of CMO is held by a doctor who serves to advise and lead a team of medical experts on matters of public health importance. Since Dr Yogesh Sharma's suspension on March 8 by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and TMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, the position of chief medical officer has been vacant for the past two months.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that during a surprise visit to the civic-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital at Kalwa in Thane district to inaugurate a refurbished labour ward and the surgery section, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed displeasure about the poor working condition of the facility and the lack of facilities for doctors and decided to take stern action against it. Considering that the facility wasn't up to the mark and the doctors were suffering, Shinde suspended the Dean and TMC's CMO.
As per a media report by Free Press journal, Ravindra Manjarekar, public relationship officer TMC said, "The then chief medical officer of TMC, Dr R. T. Kendra, retired five years ago. Since then six to seven medical officers have been appointed to this post. This included medical officers in municipal service and those sent on deputation by the state government. Some of them resigned on their own. So Dr Rajiv Murudkar had to resign due to bribery. Also, the chief medical officer of the TMC and dean of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, Dr Yogesh Sharma and deputy dean Dr Suchit Kumar Kamkhedkar were suspended two months ago."
Manjarekar added, "The charge of the TMC chief medical officer post was entrusted to Dr Rakesh Barot. On this post, the state government has now appointed the senior medical officer of Mumbai Municipal Corporation Dr. Chetna Nitil K. She has been deputed for a period of one year."
