The hospital was developed by young medical professionals who were motivated by the philosophy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and it was established by the Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakeeya Pratishthan (RSS).

A charitable foundation called Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakiya Pratisthan (BAVP) offers the underprivileged in India access to high-quality healthcare at reasonable costs. Dr Hedgewar Hospital is the nucleus of this trust. It provides excellent medical services at an affordable cost to the common man.

Although slums are home to around 25% of Aurangabad's population, an NGO working for their improvement operates three centres there, connecting it to the remaining 30% of slum dwellers. There are around 1,50,000 people involved in social and medical activities. The NGO also operates a mobile clinic known as Shri Guruji Chalachikitsalay. This clinic has helped 4,00,000 underprivileged residents of slums over the course of 7 years, reports the Organizer.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakiya Pratishthan trust is responsible for handling the hospital. It is an organization run by Professionals Doctors who have come together to give the maximum of themselves to the society. Since 1989 trust has treated 60,00,000 poor patients.

To fulfill the vision of providing ample access to affordable healthcare, a 10-bed hospital was first started in 1989 by doctors who saved from their salary and even borrowed money and then decided to manage their life on subsistent income, which set an example for generations of doctors. The hospital has now upgraded itself to a 300 bedded hospital, equal to the facility of 3 Tertiary-care hospitals.

BAVP includes institutions like Dr Hedgewar Hospital, Aurangabad Babasaheb Ambedkar Medical research society, Aurangabad Dattaji Bhale Blood bank, Aurangabad Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Ekatma Samaj Mandal, and Dr Hedgewar nursing college.
