Massive Rs 2.53 crores MBBS Admission Scam, 13 Aspirants cheated with promise of admission at Nashik Medical College

Yerawada: Another case of MBBS admission scam has come to light when the FIR has been filed by the police against four to five agents who had cheated 13 students of Rs 2.53 crore on the pretext of promising them admission to an MBBS course at a well-known college in Nashik.  

As per a media report in the Hindustan Times, the case has been registered against the accused after a parent of a student in Ahmednagar district approached the police. The complainant made the complaint representing the statement from other affected persons as well.

The police said that the agents met the complainant in Vimannagar and Gangapur in Nashik, after which they took around Rs 30.72 lakh from him promising to secure his son admission to an MBBS course at Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Nashik in the management quota, reports the HT. 

The accused used to run an office under the name of an educational firm at Viman Nagar said the police. The accused is said to have given them a fake 'allotment and selection letter' in the name of the complainant's son. 

The cheating came to be known when the students reached the said medical college in Nashik and found that their names were not present in the list of students who were granted admission. As per a media report in the Times of India, the college officials responded to this that they had never issued the 'selection and allotment letters' the victims were carrying. 

The agents are reported to have similarly taken money from 12 others, collecting around Rs 2.53 crore. The Police station in-charge Yunus Shaikh said that a case under sections 420, 465, 468, 471, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, has been filed against the accused and teams have been formed to catch them. 

Sub-inspector Ankush Dombale from the Yerawada police said, "The agents and others had the data of students interested in seeking medical admission. The suspects and their office staff called them and their parents and lured them to visit their office and promised to help them get the management quota seats at a cheap rate."

The accused reportedly gave them an estimated cost of Rs 69 lakh with a hostel facility for a four-year MBBS course in a Nashik college. When the complainants found the rough estimate given to be less as compared to other medical colleges in Pune and Ahmednagar. The parents believed the false assurances and paid the agents varying amounts for seeking admission without verifying their credentials. 

He said, "The suspects issued security deposit cheques to the parents and instructed them to seek admission in the college between April 1 and 5. After the parents and their wards visited Nashik, the conmen introduced them to a man who claimed to be working as a personal assistant in the college. The man showed them the selection and allotment letters of their wards and took their signatures on the admission forms.

The senior inspector Yunus Shaikh from the Yerawada police said, "The suspects have shut down the office and fled. We will question their two women employees. We are conducting a technical investigation and working on clues."

Police Sub-Inspector Ankush Dombale, the investigating officer told Indian Express, "Probe is on. No arrests have been made yet. We suspect the accused have cheated more people from different places in Maharashtra, including Pune, in the admission scam."
