Sangli Horror: 2 medicos arrested for sedating, raping fellow MBBS student
Sangli: The Vishrambag police have arrested three men, including two medical students, on the charge of gang-raping a 22-year-old MBBS student of a city-based medical college after lacing her drink with a sedative on May 18. The students were reportedly classmates of the woman.
According to Vishrambag police, the arrested youths took the girl to a room in Wanlesswadi and gave her a cold drink mixed with an intoxicant. She fell asleep and then, all three raped her. After she woke up early that morning, the girl rushed to the Vishrambag police station and lodged a complaint against three.
The female medico, a 3rd-year MBBS student, originally from Karnataka, was studying in a medical college in Sangli. Police immediately swung into action and arrested all three youths. Further investigation is on, sources informed UNI.
As per the medico's complaint, the incident occurred in one of the men's rented apartments in Wanlesswadi.
Speaking to TOI, the police informed that two of the arrested men are the woman's classmates from Pune and Solapur, and the third is their friend from Sangli, The officials added that the survivor is from Belagavi in Karnataka. The men are aged between 20 and 22. The woman said in her complaint that the three men threatened her against disclosing the incident to anyone, police said.
The woman told her parents and reported the crime to the Vishrambag police on Tuesday night.
Subsequently, police arrested the three men and produced them before a Sangli court on Wednesday. The court ordered their custodial remand till May 27.
The complainant said in the FIR that the incident took place between 10pm and midnight of Sunday when one of the three men took her to the apartment on the pretext of a brief halt before going to a theatre for a movie. She said the three men consumed liquor and gave her a sedative-laced drink. Soon, she started feeling dizzy, and was sexually assaulted by the trio, she said, quotes TOI
Inspector Sudhir Bhalerao, of the Vishrambag police, told TOI, "We are verifying her statement. We referred the survivor to a medical exam soon after she registered the case. The medical report is awaited."
Police have invoked charges for an offence under section 70(1), which refers to gang rape in furtherance of common intention, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In case of conviction, the offence is punishable with a sentence of not less than 20 years.
