Removal of NEIGRIHMS Director, not a new issue: Meghalaya Health Minister

Shillong -  Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek recently said the decision to remove Prof (Dr) D. M. Thappa as Director of North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Director, was nothing new.

"This is a pending issue not a new issue, The governing body already took a decision last year to remove the Director this is not a new issue. How it will affect COVID-19," Hek asked.

"Whoever takes charge of NEIGRIHMS they will have to fight the pandemic and it is a continuing process," the Health Minister added.

On Saturday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued an order directing Prof ( Dr ) Thappa to return to his parent institute Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.

Thappa has handed over charge to the senior most Professor and Head of the Anaesthesia department, P Bhattacharjee.

On the issue of strained relationship with senior doctors of the Institute and also serious allegations Hek said that a fact finding team and surveillance team is already on the job to get to the truth.

"A team is already there to find out any kind of discrepancy during his tenure. I won't be able to comment until I get a report from the surveillance committe or the hospital itself," the State Health Minister said.

He said many allegations and counter allegations were made but until and unless the fact finding team gives proofs it we won't able to tell who is guilty.

He said that the fact finding team will give their report to the Union Health Ministry.

"Any kind of decision taken by the government of India we are here to work with them. We have given all the support to the government of India we are also looking to the centre to support the state government," Hek added.

He also said that decision taken by the centre is taken in the best interest.
