Sangrur: In a meeting held between Hussan Lal, principal secretary of medical education and research and deputy commissioner, and other senior officials had discussed the establishment of a new medical college in Sangrur.

According to the state government, the new medical college will be established with full government funding. The process to build the medical college has already been started in Sangrur.

While speaking with HT, Jitendra Jorwal, Sangrur deputy commissioner said "Chief minister Bhagwant Mann wants to set up a medical college in Sangrur, and we are identifying land for it. We have zeroed in on three suitable sites. Government teams will visit these locations to finalise the site,"

CM Mann is now following the footsteps of former CM Charanjit Singh Channi who earlier last year in November promised to establish a new medical college in Sangrur with ₹350-crore state funding.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the former CM was supposed to lay the foundation stones for the medical colleges at Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur as well. The former Chief Minister's Office as the CMO Twitter handle shared the news and wrote, "CM @CharanjitChanni gave go-ahead to the recruitment of approximately 3400 various posts in the Health Department. CM to lay the foundation Stones of Medical colleges at Kapurthala & Hoshiarpur soon also announces to set up a new Medical College in Sangrur with 100% State funding."

Currently, there are four government medical colleges in Punjab which include Amritsar, Patiala, Faridkot, and Mohali. There were two more planned in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur, but their fate is unknown at this time.

Meanwhile, Hussan Lal recently visited the Sangrur civil hospital to assess the situation and determine the needs for the medical college's establishment and confirmed that the site will be finalized soon.

He said "I have visited the Sangrur civil hospital to review the requirements to be fulfilled for setting up a medical college (according to the National Medical Council norms). First, the hospital needs to be upgraded to 300 beds,"
