3rd-year MBBS student of Stanley Medical College found dead in hostel room, probe on

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident, a third-year MBBS student at the Government Stanley Medical College was allegedly found dead inside his hostel room in Seven Wells on Wednesday.

The deceased was a 25-year-old student and a native of Ernakulam in Kerala who was found unconscious lying on his bed and broken ampoules of two drugs and a syringe were found in his room. 

The incident was discovered on Wednesday when some classmates of the student went to his room after they found him missing from class and campus. However, the door was locked from the inside following which they repeatedly knocked on the door but the student failed to respond to it.

Finding it suspicious, they contacted the hostel security, who finally broke open the door and found the student in an unconscious state in his bed. He was immediately rushed to the Medical College hospital where he was declared brought dead.

His body will be handed over to his family members after post-mortem procedures. His parents have already reached the city in the evening after receiving his passing news from the college authorities. 

Although the reason for his death remains unknown, the police have not ruled it as suicide and have launched an investigation to determine the possibility of any foul play.

A police officer informed TNIE, "We went to the hostel and broke open the door. We found him lying unconscious with a syringe and two empty vials near him. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. The body was then sent for postmortem. We are not ruling out death by suicide."

When contacted, a senior officer of Greater Chennai police told IANS that the forensic examination was on and further investigation would be conducted based on the post-mortem report and forensic report of his body.

Speaking on the matter, Stanley Hospital dean Dr P Balaji told TOI, "It was a powerful combination ... the dose of drugs would have killed him in less than three minutes. He was brought to the ER, where doctors declared him ‘brought dead."

A case of unnatural death has been registered by the police. An investigation is underway.
