875 more MBBS seats to be added in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Augmenting the existing MBBS seat pool in medical colleges, the state of Tamil Nadu will add 875 more seats for medical aspirants.

This came after the government decided to give approval to three new private medical colleges and grant additional seats to 6 medical colleges in the state. The private medical colleges which secured the approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently include Bharat Medical College, Indira Medical College, and Hospital and Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute.

According to a recent media report in TOI, NMC recently granted approval to Bharat Medical College and Hospital which comes under the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research. The college will start accepting 150 MBBS students from this academic session.

The Commission has also given approval to Indira Medical College and Hospital in Thiruvallur. The college is affiliated under Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University and the institution will also get additional 150 MBBS seats.

Earlier, Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute secured the approval of the authorities to admit 150 MBBS students.

Hence, the three new colleges will add 450 seats in the existing MBBS seats. The Counseling for the seats in two of these colleges will be conducted by the State Selection Committee as they will add to the state seat matrix of MBBS seats.

According to Times of India, other than the new institutions, the colleges which also secured permission to increase their seats include Kanyakumari Medical College, ESIC College in KK Nagar, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute, Vinayaka Mission Kirupananda Variyar Medical College in Salem.
While ESIC college has secured a nod for 25 more seats and the government college of Kanyakumari is more likely to add 50 more seats. PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research is going to add 100 more seats while Saveetha Medical College and Hospital and Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute both have also increased their seat capacity to 100 each.
All the three colleges will now have 250 MBBS seats each. Other than that Vinayaka Mission Kirupananda Variyar Medical College in Salem will add 50 seats which will give it a total of 150 MBBS seats. With the addition of the new seats, the state will have 52 medical colleges with almost 8000 MBBS seat capacity including 26 government institutions that have 3650 seats, reports the daily.
