Chennai: Collating data to study the impact of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on medical education, the high-level panel constituted by Tamil Nadu Government has revealed that it has received 25,000 representations until Monday, wherein, more people want it scrapped.

Confirmation to this effect has been given by Justice AK Rajan, who heads the panel.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Tamil Nadu Government had asked the public to submit their opinion on holding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2021 amidst the pandemic. Issuing a newspaper advertisement, the Government had sought feedback from people on the matter on or before June 23

The State had formed a high-level panel to study the impact of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, NEET on aspirants in Tamil Nadu, especially those belonging to the rural areas, and socially disadvantaged sections. It was decided that the eight-member committee led by a retired judge of Madras High Court, A K Rajan would study the impact of the screening test required for medical admissions on the students and submit its recommendations within a month.
The step was taken considering that almost all parties including the ruling DMK and the main opposition AIADMK are on the same page regarding NEET and they have been demanding that the test be scrapped arguing that it went against social justice.
The panel was formed to study the data related to medical admissions in the state and make necessary recommendations within a month to safeguard the interests of students from the backward sections and "the government will initiate the next course of action after considering the recommendations," an official release had earlier said.
The New Indian Express reports that meeting reporters on Tuesday, the panel stated that it received huge responses from various stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers and politicians

"We got mixed feedback on NEET. Although more people want it scrapped, there are many who want the test to be held. Some have suggested reintroducing it after a few years and some others have suggested scrapping it after a few years," he stated.

Justice Rajan further mentioned that in order to answer questions posed by the government, the panel is now collecting the required data.

"We still have not collected sufficient data. We will make recommendations to the government based on the data we get," he informed, adding that there will not be an extension of time period for public feedback as the panel has already received overwhelming feedback.
