The MoHFW has shared the details in response to the series of questions raised by the Parliament member Dr Kalanidhi Veeraswamy. The MP sought to know the details of funds sanctioned/allocated and utilised, targets set and achievements so far for converting district/referral hospitals into medical colleges in Tamil Nadu during the last three years and the current year. The MP also inquired whether the government has approved some more colleges in Tamil Nadu under the new phase of the National Health Mission (NHM).

In response to the questions, MoHFW informed that 11 medical colleges have been sanctioned in Tamil Nadu under CSS in three phases. The entire share of the Central Government for these 11 medical colleges has already been released to the state government. With this, all these 11 medical colleges have become operational.

“The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college. The fund sharing mechanism between the Centre and State Governments is in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States, and 60:40 for others”.

Meanwhile, as per the fund data shared by the MoHFW, the highest amount in the last three years has been released to the medical college in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu where Rs 325 crore was approved by the government and Rs 195 crore shared by the Central, therefore, a total amount of funds released from 2021-22 to 2024-25 is Rs. 134.72 crores.

Subsequently, Rs 325 crore has been sanctioned by the government for the other 9 districts of the state and Rs 195 crore has been shared by the Centre for each, hence the total amount of funds released from 2021-22 to 2024-25 is Rs 145 crore.
