TN Health Minister Assures 1739 MBBS, 1410 BDS Govt Quota Seats in Self-financing Colleges

Chennai: The medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu will have at least 1,739 MBBS and 1,410 BDS government quota seats in the self-financing institutes, the Health Minister of the State Ma Subramanian assured on Friday.

Apart from this, another 450 seats in three new institutes including two private medical colleges and one university and another 50 MBBS seats in ESIC Medical College in KK Nagar will also be added to the seat matrix.

However, the State is not going to have any new medical colleges or any additional MBBS seats in the government medical colleges in 2023, adds TOI.

According to the data shared by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, there are altogether 72 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu with an intake capacity of 11225 MBBS seats.

Among these 5225 MBBS seats are available at 38 government medical colleges and another 6000 MBBS seats are available at 34 private medical institutes across the country.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, recently in order to discuss seat sharing, the Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian met with the administrators of 19 self-financing medical colleges and 20 self-financing dental colleges. According to the informal agreement made between the parties, 50% seats in the minority institutes will remain available for the students as government quota seats, while the non-minority institutes will share 65% of their seats. Tamil Nadu has seven minority institutes.

Further, 15% of the seats will be reserved for non-resident Indians and the remaining seats will be available for the students as management quota seats. The Minister said, "We have asked the colleges to share seats as per the agreement and they have agreed." Meanwhile, the colleges have asked the government to make sure that the admission process does not get delayed.

Commenting on the matter, officials informed the daily, "The government is keen on getting more government quota seats because fees paid here are less compared to the management and NRI quota. Fee for students from government schools allotted under the 7.5% quota is paid by the government."

While the students getting admitted to the government quota seats have to pay around Rs 4.35 lakh to Rs 4.50 lakh per year as tuition fees, the management quota students pay Rs 13.5 lakh and the NRI quota students need to pay Rs 24.5 lakh for the same.

Besides, the State has also asked 18 private medical colleges and 16 private dental colleges to surrender 407 postgraduate medical and 139 postgraduate dental seats for admission through the government quota.
