Indian Army medical officer lost life while saving 3 soldiers from Siachen fire

Lucknow: Captain Anshuman Singh, an Indian Army medical officer sacrificed his life while saving his fellow soldiers and other victims after a fire broke out in the ammunition dump at Siachen Glacier in the Ladakh region.

The medical officer successfully saved three soldiers who secured second-degree burns. He then again tried to search for other survivors but unfortunately lost his life to the fire. 

Captain Anshuman Singh was a Regimental Medical Officer and he belonged to Lucknow. Army officials said that the incident took place in the Saltoro region. The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the ammunition bunker, which engulfed several tents in the vicinity at around 3.30 am on Wednesday, reports Bhaskar.

Anshuman Singh got married 5 months ago on 10 February. Captain Anshuman had gone to Siachen almost one month ago. Anshuman was selected for Armed Force Medical College, Pune. After doing MBBS from there, Captain Anshuman Singh joined the Army Medical Corps. Recently, he became the Medical Officer of a battalion posted in the Poonch sector of Kashmir. His father Ravi Pratap Singh was a JCO in the army.

As per ANI, Leh-based defence spokesperson Lt Col PS Sidhu stated, "In a fire accident in the Siachen glacier today, one officer lost his life while three soldiers were injured. The injured have been safely evacuated from there to hospital. Three other personnel suffered smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. They have been safely air evacuated for further treatment. The condition of the injured personnel is reported to be stable." Lt. Gen. (retired) Satish Dua tweeted,” In a fire accident at Siachen glacier, Capt Anshuman, a medical officer, lost his life while trying to save his soldiers."

Senior military officers of the Army Medical Corps and Command Hospital reached Anshuman Singh's house on Wednesday morning. He informed father Ravi Pratap Singh about the martyrdom of Captain Anshuman Singh.

CM Yogi Adityanath has paid tribute to martyr Anshuman Singh. Yogi has also announced financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the martyr. He has also announced to give a government job to a member of the martyr's family, to name a road in the district after Shaheed Anshuman Singh, reports the daily.

The medical community as well as the countrymen have expressed grief over the untimely demise of the young army officer who just started his career and his life. One of the medical professionals shared on social media, "Capt Anshuman Singh, a young Army Medical Corps officer, succumbed to burn injuries sustained while rescuing 3 of his men from the fire-ravaged bunkers in Siachen."

Another soldier stated, "Captain Anshuman Singh, Young medical officer laid down his life while trying to rescue & save fellow soldiers in a fire accident at Siachen. He saved 3 comrades before going down valiantly. He is from our College - AFMC, Pune. Dear Anshuman, Salute to you brother… You are our HERO."
