Varanasi: The Azamgarh police recently arrested a man who tried to extort Rs 60 lakh from a doctor, following an exchange of fire near Bankat area under the limits of kotwali police station.

According to a recent report by TOI, the incident began with a distressing blackmail call received by a local doctor, demanding a huge amount of Rs 60 lakh and accompanied by a menacing threat. The doctor immediately reported this alarming call to the police, by making a formal complaint.

SP Azamgarh, Anurag Arya, stated that the doctor's report triggered immediate police actions to trace the anonymous caller and arrest the person responsible for this criminal act.

On a sudden Saturday, the police received crucial information about the suspect's location. Acting on the received information, The Kotwali police acted quickly to mark a perimeter encompassing the Bankat area initiated a detailed inspection of vehicles and commenced thorough vehicle inspections. However, this operation took an unexpected turn when Inspector Kotwali Shashimauli Pandey made an attempt to catch a youth on a motorcycle. The young man responded by opening fire at the officers and making a desperate attempt to run away from being captured by police.

As per a report in TOI, the situation suddenly got worse, prompting the police to reply with gunshots, After being arrested and subdued, the accused, named Ammar (or Nijat), was immediately admitted to the district hospital for medical treatment. Along with the arrest of the accused, police recovered a locally built pistol, live rounds of ammo, and the mobile phones used by the accused to make the blackmail calls.

Ammar admitted to routinely accompanying his father, a carpenter, when he worked at the doctor's clinic, residence, and farmhouse, putting new evidence on the unfolding case.
