The order to this effect of forced retirement was issued on behalf of the director of Health and Medical Services, Dr. Pooja Pandey, on September 15, to ensure the efficient and proper functioning of health care services and health facilities in the state.

However, the decision of the government has been severely criticized by the State Employees Joint Council, UP, and the council is now looking forward to launching a protest against the same.

According to a recent media report, the order stated that a screening committee will be organized in order to review the performances of class 3 and class 4 healthcare employees of the clerical cadre. The committee will comprise four members and it will start reviewing the performance of the employees based on several aspects. Eventually, it will submit a report to the government.

One of the sources from the health department confirmed that the screening process will be conducted to analyze the performance of the staff based on their attendance, physical fitness, and their efficiency in using technological devices like computers. The authorities have clarified that those employees who will not pass the bar of performance set by the review committee will have to accept compulsory retirement.

Atul Mishra, the general secretary of the council stated that this decision of the government will put the jobs of 1400 employees at stake. He further added that at a time like this when health care workers are working day and night in order to contain the pandemic in several states and scarcity in the number of health workers is also identified, this kind of decision will only hamper the smooth running of health facilities.

He mentioned that the decision was taken against staff who are neither medical not paramedical yet they play an important part in containing the pandemic and this kind of decision of the government will only affect their morals.

Talking to the print he stated " this decision is deplorable. This will make all the employees apprehensive as no one really knows who will be thrown out under the guise of under-performance." He further added that "All health department employees have been playing crucial roles during this pandemic. The role and responsibility of class 3 and 4 employees are quite important in the CMO's (Chief Medical Officer) office in every district. We have an important role in monitoring the health services associated with Covid-19."

The council has decided to consult with the employees in each of the districts of the state and thereafter, they will be holding protests against the government's decision across the state on the 14th of October.

"We also have other demands which will be raised during the demonstration,' the statement added.
