Kolkata: Eminent doctor and Founder of the pain management unit in ESI Hospital Sealdah, Dr Subrata Goswami breathed his last at the age of 59. He was suffering from motor neurone disease for a long time.

It is a rare condition that progressively damages the parts of the nervous system. He was undergoing treatment but all his fight ended at six o'clock on Wednesday morning. The medical community of the state is saddened by his death.

He was the founder of the Pain Management Institute at ESI Hospital, Sealdah. He has contributed a lot in the medical field of this state for which he has been honored with many international awards. He pursued his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College. He Joined Sealdah ESI Hospital in 1994 as a Medical Officer of Anaesthesiology. He started working as the course director of the 'Institute of Pain Management' in that hospital in 2013. In 2010 he received FIPP Fellowship in Pain Management from USA, reports Anandabazar.

He was recognized on the world stage for creating guidelines to solve the problem of back and leg pain. He completed his PhD in Pain Management from Jadavpur University. He took voluntary retirement from the post of Deputy Director (Medical) of ESI in January this year. Dr Subrata Goswami took on the responsibility of training entry-level non-specialist doctors in pain management.

Sealdah ESI Hospital was established in 2013. At that time, there were no sufficient doctors in the facility. Dr Goswami dedicatedly worked on its own feet by training doctors. However, SSKM Hospital's Neurologist Bimankanti Roy, Orthopedic Doctor Anand Kishore Pal, Prashant Roy Karmakar, and others were by his side in this great initiative. The medical community of the state is determined to take steps for pain management following the way shown by Goswami.

Many of the medical professionals have extended condolences to the bereaved family member of the doctor. Dr Jyotsna Kumar Mandal took on social media and stated, " The initiator of Pain Management Institute (PMI) at ESI Hospital, Sealdah and famous doctor of chronic pain management Dr Subrata Goswami, left us forever yesterday (05.07.2023). The state of West Bengal lost a great Doctor who rendered his service to the labourers to release their pain because of their daily routine job. He was suffering from auto-immune motor neuron disease since 2020. I lost my co-researcher. May his soul rest in peace."

Indian Society for Study of Pain also expressed their grief at the sudden demise of the doctor and stated, "Dear friends Just got the sad news of the demise of our beloved Dr Subrata Goswami. We have lost a great teacher, an outstanding mentor and a gentle human. His contribution to the field of Pain Medicine will be remembered for ages to come. ISSP offers its condolences to the bereaved family and friends and pray for sadgati to the departed soul. Om Shanti."
