On-duty Junior doctors face mob attack at Malda Medical College and Hospital

Malda: In another case of violence against doctors, the kin of a patient ransacked a hospital facility and assaulted on-duty junior doctors after a patient died of snake bites at Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH). 

Following the incident, almost 100 junior doctors staged a sit-in protest demanding adequate security for the medical staff and on-duty junior doctors.     

The incident took place on the premises of Malda Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal and five junior doctors were attacked by an angry mob of 20 people. A complaint has been lodged by the authorities against the people who allegedly carried out the violence.      

As per a recent media report by The Statesman, Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal Puranjoy Saha said, “ A group of 20 people assaulted junior doctors and even the security personnel after the death of a patient. Police did not come on time to prevent them from attacking junior doctors, who were on duty, despite they informed the police on time to save them.”   

A patient who was received with snake bytes was rushed to MMCH from Naldubi village, Old Malda. The relatives of the patient alleged that the patient was stable and confident. One of them said, “We tied a cloth above the wound. The patient died after junior doctors administered an injection and then untied it.” Alleging negligence the kin of the patient started assaulting the junior doctors and ransacking the hospital's unit.

Akash Datta, one of the doctors informed the Daily that the doctors took her blood sample and identified the venom (Chandrabora snake) and administered an injection as per the protocol. But after that, the patient suddenly collapsed. 

Following the incident of the attack on the on-duty doctors, the doctors demanded proper security to ensure the safety of the doctors. One of the junior doctors, Akash Datta said, “We are nearly 100 interns here have staged sit-in demonstration demanding adequate security for on-duty junior doctors. We are also demanding that senior doctors will be on duty with us for our safety.”
