Telangana state to get its first government medical college

Mahbubnagar district in the new state of Telangana will get it first state run medical college. It will be the first district level government run medical college in Telangana.

The government is reported have officially declared an investment of Rs 450 crore for setting the infrastructure. A 25-acre land  near Tirumala Hills at Yedira village near Jadcherla for construction of the college building has also been identified as a part of the initial monetary investment.

A hospital is also to be launched alongside the medical college. The initial plan of the state government is to inaugurate the hospital with 250 beds, and then gradually increase its capacity to 550 beds to accommodate more patients.

As indicated by the director of medical education Ramani, the college is likely to commence in August 2016 with a batch of 150 students initially. Sources have further confirmed the government had already appointed Dr Ashok Reddy, professor of mental health from OU, as principal of the college.

Laboratories of Pathology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Radiology are also planned to be launched in a phased-wise manner. In the first year the college is likely to have three departments _ Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology.

Speaking to Express, health minister C.Laxma Reddy said, "At present, more than 3 lakh students are competing for just 3,900 medical seats in the state. With increasing fee structures in private medical colleges, it is becoming tough for  economically poor students to study MBBS."
