Chandigarh: In a tragic incident, a 33-year-old senior resident doctor at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh died during trekking at Churdhar peak in Himachal Pradesh.

The deceased doctor is identified as Dr Saugata Choudhary, a native of Kolkata. He was assistant blood transfusion officer at the Department of Transfusion Medicine at PGI Chandigarh.

On November 20, Dr Saugata along with a group of ten other members had travelled from Chandigarh for trekking and stayed at Chabdhar that very day. The next morning, they travelled and camped at Tisri village. Thereafter, the doctor trekked further towards Churdhar.

However, at this point of time, Dr Saugata felt discomfort and complained of breathlessness and decided to stay at one of the eating joints. The same night his condition deteriorated and the doctor was declared dead by the rescue team along with the health staff who reached there on calling a helpline number. He was taken to Nohradhar, where doctors pronounced him dead too.

Upon hearing the news, PGI director Jagat Ram formed a team of doctors, including a pulmonologist, an anaesthesiologist and a young transfusion student who was Dr Choudhary's friend, to rescue and bring him back for treatment at PGI Chandigarh.

However, Dr Coudhary had already taken his last breath.

Official sources at PGI told The Indian Express that Dr Chaudhary was cremated in Sector 25 on Sunday. His parents flew in from Kolkata for the last rites.

“Despite best efforts, it is hard to reach individuals on a trek quickly,” sources from the deceased's department told the daily.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about two doctors, who had died in separate road accidents in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
