Union health Minister praises AIIMS doctors for performing rarest of rare surgery on conjoined twins

New Delhi: After the first successful craniopagus conjoined twins separation surgery from India wherein both the babies have survived, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday said the doctors of AIIMS have demonstrated extraordinary talent, expertise, determination and compassion in achieving it.
The twins cojoined at the head suffered with a rare condition that is present in one out of 25 lakh births and poses 80 per cent risk to the lives of children involved.
“This is the first successful craniopagus conjoined twin separation surgery from India wherein both children have survived…Worldwide only 10 to 15 children have survived after such surgical separation in the past 50 years. This is an extremely rare condition,” Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said today applauding the AIIMS team for their feat.
