GreenLight laser tied to shorter catheterization times and hospital stays compared to TURP for BPH
GreenLight laser tied to shorter catheterization times and hospital stays compared to Transurethral resection of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia suggests a new study published in the Urology.
Most aging men experience lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). While medical therapy can initially treat men with bothersome LUTS, many patients experience inadequate symptom relief or intolerance to oral medications. In such cases, or if men desire to stop medication, surgical treatment may be indicated
A study was conducted to compare perioperative outcomes and complications between GreenLight and Transurethral resection of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia. A systematic review and random effects meta-analysis of randomized trials comparing GreenLight with Transurethral resection of the prostatewas completed. Primary outcomes included periprocedural milestones, 12 pre-defined complications, Clavien-Dindo class III-V complications, reoperations (all-cause), and a composite of reoperations and readmissions. Metaregression assessed the relationship between patient- and study-level factors with periprocedural outcomes and reoperation rates. Results:The review included 13 randomized trials with 1,757 patients. Procedure time was 10 minutes longer with GreenLight, while catheterization time and hospital stay were shorter. Bleeding-related complications, including clot retention and transfusion, as well as sexual dysfunction, were less frequent with GreenLight. All other complications occurred at similar frequencies between groups. The risks of reoperation and reoperation or readmission did not differ. GreenLight achieved shorter catheterization times and hospital stays with lower rates of sexual dysfunction and bleeding-related complications compared to Transurethral resection of the prostate.
