Uttarakhand: Doctors strike ends after court intervention

Dehradun: The strike of 1700 doctors of Indian Medical Association, Uttarakhand State Branch, which continued today morning has finally come to end after the intervention of the District Court.

The state-wide strike, involving private practitioners had gathered momentum after the authorities failed to catch the culprits who had assaulted a cardiologist in Haldwani. The incident, which had taken place last thursday, is rumoured to have involved persons with strong connections to the ruling party, as a result of which the culprits are said to be still at large.

Around 1700 members of the IMA branch, while striking to demand for justice for their injured colleague had moved all political authorities to seek action. Finally, they filed a PIL at the Nainital District court, seeking court intervention and urgent arrest of the accused. Speaking to Medical Dialogues, representatives of the IMA informed, " The Standing council representing the government has asked for time till the 4th of January, 2016 assuring us that the necessary action shall be undertaken by then. We have faith in the judiciary and hoping that justice will prevail by 4th Jan, we ask our members to resume work."

The private practitioners across the state had gone on strike after a mob of 50 people had assaulted a cardiologist at Haldwani. Private hospitals had continued to remain closed during this duration.
