Bankura:  A contract labourer died today after being allegedly beaten up with a bamboo pole by a doctor of Bankura Sammilani Medical College two days ago in the district.

A senior Medical College official said a complaint has been filed at the local police station by the state-run medical facility against doctor Debal Soren, of physiology department, who allegedly beat up the victim, Prashanto Deghoria, with bamboo pole following an argument.

The argument began after paint spilled over Soren's parked car during renovation work by PWD in an adjacent department building, the official said.

As Deghoria fell on the ground in the compound, he was taken inside the Bankura hospital first and from there shifted to SSKM Hospital, Kolkata on that evening itself, the official said.

Deghoria, who hailed from a village near Bankura town, died at the Kolkata hospital tonight, a district police officer said, adding the accused doctor was absconding.

The hospital has already initiated action against Soren and ordered an inquiry into the incident.
