Five Physician Philosophies: Magnetize, Multiply, Mesmerize - Raja Reddy
After working in pharmaceutical sales for 30 years, I have seen that while many doctors have similar skills, some just naturally attract more patients. What is their secret? Beyond medical knowledge, these doctors connect, communicate, and build trust in unique ways. This leads to great word-of-mouth recommendations. Triggering an infinity loop.
How we look at and respond to things is what we call a 'Mental Model.' I first came across this concept watching one of the interviews of Charlie Munger, legendary investor and business partner of Warren Buffet. Well-known doctors use five main ways of thinking. By using these ways, one can likely help more patients.
Empathetic Listening
These doctors take time to really hear their patients. They recognize and address their patients' emotions and worries. Patients feel understood and valued, making them likely to return and recommend the doctor to others.
Transparent Communication
Trust is a big part of patient and doctor relationship. Some doctors are especially good at explaining things simply and clearly. They avoid too much medical talk and encourage questions. This clear style helps reduce patient worries and builds a strong, trusting relationship.
Holistic Approach
Some doctors see the full picture - not just the illness but the person's overall life. They look at lifestyle, feelings, surroundings, and other factors. This complete care often leads to better health results and happier patients. A critical and often overlooked detail.
Growth Mindset
Inspired by psychologist Carol Dweck, this mindset is about believing that we can always grow and learn. Doctors with this view welcome feedback, keep learning, and embrace new medical technologies or methods. This shows patients that their doctor is truly dedicated to their profession.
Service-Oriented Thinking
These doctors see their job as more than just a profession; it's a way to serve others. They might offer flexible timings, affordable fees, or even participate in community health events. Such dedication brings in more patients through positive feedback and a good reputation. They also ensure that their staff imbibes this thinking.
In conclusion, when doctors use these ways of thinking with their skills, they really shine. Happy patients tell others, which brings even more people to these doctors. In simple words, these thinking styles make doctors really good at their job and patients can feel it. It's a win-win for everyone. Ultimately, this positive cycle reinforces the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the medical field for the benefit of all.
