AIIA launches six-month Garbhini Mitra course on maternal health support

The All India Institute of Ayurveda has launched the six-month Garbhini Mitra course to train personnel in Ayurveda-based prenatal, postnatal and maternal health support.
New Delhi: The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) has introduced a new training programme to develop skilled personnel who can support women during pregnancy and the postpartum period through Ayurveda-based healthcare principles. The Garbhini Mitra course has been introduced for the academic session 2026-27.
The six-month offline programme is designed to provide participants with knowledge and practical skills related to maternal health, enabling them to provide health education, lifestyle guidance and community-level support to women during pregnancy and after childbirth.
The course draws on traditional Ayurvedic approaches including Garbhini Paricharaya, covering prenatal care; Sutika Paricharya, focusing on postnatal care; and Garbhadhana Vidhi, relating to pre-conception care.

Training will be conducted at the AIIA campus in Sarita Vihar, New Delhi, from Monday to Friday between 3 pm and 5 pm. Each batch will accommodate 20 students, Bio Spectrum India reports.
The programme will also include practical training in dietary practices, lifestyle modifications and safe yoga during pregnancy. Participants will also receive training related to emotional support during delivery, newborn massage and basic life-support protocols applicable at different stages of pregnancy.
Alongside maternal and newborn care, the course will cover healthcare safety practices. These include infection control, sanitation and sanitisation, biomedical waste management and workplace safety.
Candidates who have completed their Senior Secondary (10+2) examination from any recognised board in India and are at least 18 years old can apply for the course. Students awaiting their Class 12 results can also submit a provisional application.
Following completion of the training, participants can pursue roles including Pregnant Mitra Assistant, Prenatal/Postnatal Care Assistant, Prenatal Health & Welfare Guide and Maternal Health Support Worker.
According to the programme details, trained personnel may find opportunities across AYUSH centres, maternity clinics, NGOs, community health projects and health and wellness institutions.
The initiative has been launched by AIIA, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, as a structured skill-development programme focused on strengthening community-level maternal health and wellness support through Ayurveda-based approaches.
