Maharashtra's plan to open 10 new institutes hits roadblock despite aproval for 18 medical colleges
Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Maharashtra, the State Government in its final budget before the assembly elections has announced that 18 new medical colleges would be established in the State.
These medical colleges will be set up in 18 districts with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats and 430-bed hospitals, Medical Buyer has reported.

DMK urges abolishment of NEET or approval of Tamil Nadu exemption bill in Rajya Sabha
Amid the ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities in the NEET conduct this year, DMK Rajya Sabha member P Wilson recently urged the central government to either abolish MBBS entrance test- NEET or approve Tamil Nadu's NEET exemption Bill to exclude the state from the competitive exam.
His appeal in the Upper House of Parliament came during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in the Rajya Sabha.

Medical fraternity upset over Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita new law mandating jail, fines for negligence
As announced, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into force on Doctor's Day i.e. on July 1st, 2024. However, the new laws that replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) are being opposed by the medical fraternity as many junior and senior doctors have expressed discontent over a specific section in the BNS.
Doctors are upset over the fact that the new rules have made it mandatory for doctors to serve jail term if they are found guilty of negligence not amounting to culpable homicide.

To start a 15 percent NRI quota, the state government has recently requested the National Medical Commission (NMC) to sanction 508 supernumerary MBBS seats in government autonomous medical colleges under the Department of Medical Education from the academic year 2025-26 onwards.
As per the recent report by PTI, Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said in a statement that he has written a letter to the NMC chairman requesting him to approve 15 per cent NRI quota by creating 508 additional MBBS seats for admission in 22 government medical colleges in the state.
