Vasopressor Complication Costs Patient Fingers; Hospital, Doctors slapped Rs 6 lakh compensation for negligence

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Salem, recently directed a city-based private hospital and its four doctors to pay Rs 6 lakh compensation to a patient who lost three fingers on his right hand while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Even though the hospital and the doctors claimed that standard treatment using antibiotics fluid, resuscitation, vasopressors and oxygen supplementation was given to the complainant, who was suffering from septic shock, the Consumer Court opined that the doctors should have taken reasonable care in the treatment of the complainant in choosing a method or procedure of treatment.

The court noted that high-dose infusion of vasopressors can induce peripheral vasoconstruction and Vasopressor induced tissue ischemia and gangrene.

The history of the case goes back to 2024, when the patient/complainant was admitted to the treating hospital with a fever. It was alleged by the Complainant that he was admitted to the treating hospital for simple fever, and doctors at the hospital advised ECG, radiology, and microbiology tests for the simple fever treatment.

NMC grants Conditional Approval to Medical Colleges in Chhattisgarh

In a relief to the undergraduate medical education system in Chhattisgarh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted a conditional approval to all state-run government and private medical colleges in the State for the academic session 2025-2026, as reported by the Hitavada.

Earlier, these colleges had received notices from the Apex Medical Commission for failing to meet the essential standards.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that, noting critical faculty shortage along with a lack of essential resources, NMC had issued show-cause notices to the government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh. In some cases, the Commission had imposed a monetary penalty.

NMC had reportedly imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on Kanker Medical College, Rs 4 lakh fine on Durg Medical College, and Rs 3 lakh fine each in the medical colleges located at Bilaspur, Ambikapur, Mahasamund, and Jagdalpur. Further, the medical colleges in Mahasamund, Kanker, and Raigarh had also received show-cause notices over the shortage of faculty.

Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute treats over 4,300 patients in 4 years

The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) in Ahmedabad has treated 4,397 cancer patients between 2020 and 2024, reinforcing the state's emergence as a national hub for advanced lung cancer treatment.

Of these, 3,256 patients benefited from the PMJAY-MA health scheme, underscoring the state’s commitment to affordable, high-quality cancer care.

Speaking on World Lung Cancer Day, GCRI officials urged the public to prioritise early screening and tobacco cessation, stressing that over 40 per cent of cases in India are diagnosed at late stages, significantly reducing survival chances, news agency IANS reported.

GCRI Director Dr. Shashank Pandya emphasised, “Awareness is our greatest defence. Early detection, quitting tobacco, and timely care can save lives.”

The annual number of patients seeking treatment at GCRI has seen a steady rise: 700 in 2020, 813 in 2021, 865 in 2022, 933 in 2023 and 1,086 in 2024. Among the 4,397 patients treated, 3,597 were men, 799 were women, and one child, with 1,426 patients coming from other Indian states—further validating Gujarat’s growing reputation in cancer care.
