Dr Abhijat Sheth Takes Charge as new Chairperson of National Medical Commission
New Delhi: Renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, has now been appointed as the new Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Dr. Sheth also currently holds the office of the President of the National Board of Examinations (NBE). With this appointment, both the medical education regulators, i.e., the NMC and NBE, now fall under him. He is also serving as the Director of Medical Services at Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad.
A renowned doctor, Dr. Sheth has a long and distinguished career in adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Research, and academic work initially in India and then extensively in the UK. He published more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals e.g. Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 40 abstract presentations, and 40 conference presentations at the British Thoracic Society, World Congress of Bronchology, European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society.

Government Hospitals with 220+ Beds Can Now Be Teaching Institutes: NMC
New Delhi: Non-teaching government hospitals with 220+ beds can now be designated as teaching institutions, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has confirmed in the newly released Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025.
Earlier, only a 330-bedded government hospital could be considered as a teaching hospital under the Teachers Eligibility Qualifications (TEQ) Regulations, 2022.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Commission published the final Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025 in the official Gazette on June 30, 2025. These regulations laid down the eligibility qualifications for medical teachers at medical institutes.

220-bedded Govt hospitals can now be designated as teaching institutes under new NMC rules
NMC waives Senior Residency Requirement for Foreign-Trained Doctors from Five Countries
New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has provided an exemption to doctors, who pursued their postgraduate medical qualifications from five English-speaking countries (the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), from undergoing the mandatory Senior Residentship to join as faculty (Assistant Professors) in medical colleges.
If such candidates have one year of teaching experience and are registered to practice in the respective foreign country, they can be exempted from the otherwise mandatory one-year Senior Residency required to become an Assistant Professor in India.
