New Delhi: The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) recently exonerated a Thiruvananthapuram-based hospital and its doctor from charges of medical negligence while treating a patient, who was undergoing the In-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure.

Upholding the State Commission's order, which had also dismissed the complaint, the Apex Consumer Court noted that the patient was not admitted to the hospital at the time of death and she was administered the injection by a third-party clinic on the day of her death.

MP Medical Council to Renew Doctors' License Every 5 Years

Bhopal: To keep the medical registry updated, the Madhya Pradesh Medical Council is going to introduce a system for renewing the doctors' registration every five years, ETV Bharat has reported.

Even though the Council has 63,423 doctors registered to date, the records are outdated due to a lack of verification at regular intervals. Therefore, neither the State Government nor the Medical Council has much information on how many registered doctors are working in the State and how many left the State, retired, or passed away.

Kotkapura Doctor, Hospital Directed to Pay ₹1 Lakh Compensation for Death Due to Negligence

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Faridkot has directed a Kotkapura-based doctor, Dr. Tony Kataria, and Kataria Hospital to pay ₹1 lakh compensation for medical negligence that led to the death of a 75-year-old woman. The complainant alleged that his mother, who was suffering from anaemia, was admitted to the hospital on December 19, 2018.

Despite his request not to transfer her for dialysis, the hospital proceeded with the procedure, causing her blood pressure to drop dangerously. Additionally, the hospital lacked an oxygen cylinder, and the patient passed away before a relative could bring one.

The National Medical Commission's (NMC) centralized database for registered medical practitioners in modern medicine, National Medical Register (NMR), is struggling to live up to its ambitious promises as only 284 doctors' names have been included in the NMR, while 6,198 applications were not approved, and 2 were rejected outright, reveals an RTI reply.

Launched on August 23, 2024, by the Union Health Minister, the NMR was envisioned as a transformative initiative to centralize and streamline the registration of doctors across India. Aimed at ensuring an authentic, dynamic, and consolidated database of Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs), the portal promised a hassle-free and efficient registration process. However, the reality has fallen far short.
