Court Orders Rs 3.4 Lakh Payout for Bariatric Surgery
Signifying that an insurer cannot deny mediclaims without concrete evidence of pre-existing treatment, the Surat Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (Additional) has directed an insurance company to reimburse around Rs 3.4 lakh for a 42-year-old policyholder's weight-loss surgery, which the company had previously denied.
The patient, a resident of Dabholi, Surat, underwent bariatric surgery for morbid obesity from January 27, 2022, to February 1, 2022, at a private hospital. He paid Rs 3,39,691 for the procedure and subsequently filed a claim under his Rs 5 lakh floater mediclaim policy, which was valid from August 24, 2021, to August 23, 2022. The patient as a policyholder maintained continuous health insurance coverage since 2010.

Non-Compliance! CAT attaches GMC Principal's Salary
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Jammu Bench, has ordered the attachment of the salary of the Principal, Government Medical College (GMC), Kathua, for failing to comply with its previous directive regarding the appointment of an Assistant Professor in the Dentistry department.
The order was passed in contempt proceedings titled "Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah (IAS), Health and Medical Education Department vs. Dr Ashanka Bhardwaj".

MBBS Admissions- HC Upholds Changes in Sports Quota Criteria
While considering a plea that challenged the changed criteria for MBBS admission under the sports quota category for the academic session 2023-2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently upheld the decision of the Punjab Government to make changes in the MBBS admission criteria under sports quota for the academic session 2023-2024, after the issuance of the prospectus.
Even though the HC bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel asserted that the prospectus carried the force of law and must be adhered to without any deviation, it also observed that it could not be said with certitude that under no circumstances no change could be brought about in the admission process criteria.
