Holding Guwahati-based Hospital and its doctors liable for medical negligence, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) recently granted Rs 20 lakh compensation to the patient, who suffered permanent damage to the vocal organs after undergoing treatment at the Hospital.

Apart from the Rs 20 lakh compensation, the Apex Consumer Court has further granted Rs 50,000 as legal costs.

The history of the case goes back to 2013, when after meeting with an accident in Arunachal Pradesh, the complainant was rushed to the General Hospital in Naharlagun for his initial treatment. Thereafter, the complainant was referred to the treating hospital- GNRC Medical Hospital, Guwahati. After being treated there, the patient was discharged with a tracheostomy tube in place. The patient had undergone two tracheostomy procedures while undergoing treatment at GNRC Hospital.

Doctors across the country remain steadfast in their demand to conduct the NEET PG 2025 exam in a single shift.

As of now, two pleas are pending in this regard before the Supreme Court and amid this, the doctors under the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has written to the Executive Director of the National Board of Examinations (NBE) requesting to conduct the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) examination in a single shift to ensure fairness and transparency.

Highlighting that NEET PG is one of the most crucial examinations for medical graduates, the association argued that the decision to conduct the exam in multiple shifts raises several concerns regarding the integrity of the exam.

In a major development for future MBBS admissions in the state, the Gujarat University (GU) has recently made an announcement regarding the establishment of a new medical college and a 300-bed hospital. This will enhance the state's healthcare facilities and provide modern medical education on the lines of institutions like NHL Medical College.

Through a recent notice, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has urged the MCC, all counselling authorities, Universities and DMEs to take necessary steps to implement the recommendations of the Detailed project Report (DPR) and to prepare counselling schedule accordingly so that the counselling process should be completed one week before the last date of admission. As well as an action taken report in this regard may also be sent to this Council for submission before the Hon'ble High Court on the next date of hearing of the instant court case, the DCI said.

There have been numerous reports of irregularities committed by some dental colleges of India every year in admitting students to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) courses. These irregularities often involve admitting students after the cutoff date and failing to submit necessary details and documents to the Dental Council of India (DCI) and the affiliating universities.
