Child Deaths: More than 166 dies at Patliputra Medical College over last 7 months
Dhanbad: The Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) which is among the three government medical colleges in the state after RIMS Ranchi and MGM Jamshedpur has too witnessed a large number of minor deaths with 166 children losing their lives over the last seven-eight months in this hospital.
According to the data of the hospital from January to August a total of 1,571 children were admitted in the different wards of the hospital out of which 166 died.This means on an average 21 children losing their lives every month. The doctors blamed malnutrition and children being brought here in very serious condition as reasons behind the death. They too stated that the state government needed to accord more priority to the health of the mother and the children. In PMCH Dhanbad apart from the child department there are special new burn unit for children along with NICU, PICU and MTC wards which are supervised by about a half a dozed doctors. The hospital management said PMCH was the biggest government hospital in Koylanchal area where people from Santhal Pargana are also brought however the resources and lack of senior specialists doctors has crippled the hospital. Head of PMCH Dr Kameshwar Biswas said the team of doctors on a rotation basis functions in the hospital to take care of the children. He admitted that apart from lack of resources PMCH was also grappling with less number of associate professors.
