NEET Super-speciality or NEET SS exam is probably the most important turning point for a career of a medical professional in India, as it spells out their transition of a doctor from specialist to a super-specialist. With only a limited seats of Super-specialisation in India, and spread across in different parts of the country, doctors indeed need to strategise and prepare hard, if they wish to get the Super-specialisation of their choice as well as the institute of their choice.

Delhi Academy of Medical Sciences, DAMS, a pioneer in NEET PG preparation has recently launched a course for NEET Super Speciality which comes as a relief for students aspiring to DM/Mch courses. Medical Dialogues team asked Dr Sumer Sethi, a mentor who has helped lacs of PG aspirants for last two decades and revolutionized the PG medical entrance and training, about NEET SS Exam, and here is some of his wisdom

Q) What is the pattern of NEET Super Speciality Exam?

Now, there is one single day common exam for NEET SS courses, separately conducted for DM courses and MCh courses.

If we follow last year's pattern, this exam has questions from all medical specialities in DM courses and all surgical specialities in MCh courses. This is different from traditional speciality wise exams where students who were writing exam for CARDIOLOGY courses had to prepare for cardio specific stressing. But now, almost all speciality based exams are covered under common NEET SS pattern, where all subjects need to be covered. Exam is computer based test, with 200 MCQ to be solved in 3 hrs (180 mins) with negative marking (25%)

The government has recently taken out a notification and is currently in the process of deciding the pattern of the exam- that is whether it should be based on broad specialities or based on the super speciality that a person wants to appear in. However, till such time that the government takes a call on the pattern, its reasonable to assume that status quo from last year shall be maintained

Q) DAMS has always been on the fore front of producing topper in every competitive PG entrance exam? What course is being offered to NEET SS aspirants for students?

DAMS has been offering courses to undergraduates as foundation courses, to interns as test and discussion courses and regular batch teaching to make the MBBS doctors reach MD/MS... We are continuing "hand-holding" for our students to acheive them DM/MCh and we are offering for them unique online "test and discussion" course as our students are most familiar with this course.

Q) What are the key features of the course? Is this course for Medicine and Surgery residents only? Can other specialities also utilize it?

In test and discussion for DM entrance, we will be offering 5 individual subject wise tests of 100 Q each (cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology and endocrinology) and along with their discussion of all MCQ in the form of video teaching by individual subject experts, which comprises of 40+ teaching hours.

Similarly, in test and discussion for MCh entrance, we will be offering 5 individual subject wise tests of 100 Q each (general surgery, gastro surgery, neurosurgery, oncologysurgery and urology) and along with their discussion of all MCQ in the form of video teaching by individual subject experts, which comprises of 40+ teaching hours. And we have also included in this 5 MOCK papers of 200 Q each for DM and MCh courses separately based on recent NEET SS pattern with all india ranking.

As far as other specialities are concerned, MD (TB and chest medicine) can utilise the pulmonology discussion for DM (pulmonology) entrance examinations and we can create more papers for such students as well.

Students planning onco-specific preparation can also utiliseoncosurgery videos.

Post MD (pediatrics), DM aspirants can also utilise DM entrance course.

Q) Can you also guide for MRCP preparation? Is there any course available for Preparation in DAMS

DAMS already offers a crash course through our partners Arlington British medical Academy, Manchester in which international faculty conduct a 2-3 day crash course in Delhi for MRCP part 1. We are probably the only institute in the country where British faculty and come and offer guidance for MRCP.
