Fluoride Varnish Effective in Preventing Dental Caries: Study

India: Researchers have found in a new study that fluoride varnish is an effective preventive measure against dental caries, supporting its inclusion in public health programs to help reduce the widespread burden of tooth decay.
The findings come from a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Current Drug Research Reviews by Vikas Singh from the Department of Public Health Dentistry at Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad, India, and colleagues. The researchers examined available scientific evidence to evaluate how effective Fluoride varnish is in preventing Dental caries.
Dental caries continues to be one of the most common chronic health problems worldwide, affecting more than two billion people. Despite advances in dental care, tooth decay remains a major public health concern, especially among children and vulnerable populations. Preventive approaches such as fluoride-based treatments have long been recommended, but researchers sought to assess the strength of current evidence regarding fluoride varnish.
For this purpose, the investigators conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies evaluating the preventive role of fluoride varnish. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to ensure methodological rigor. The researchers initially screened 2,315 records obtained through database searches using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and related keywords linked to fluoride varnish and dental caries.
After applying inclusion criteria and assessing study quality, 13 randomized controlled trials were selected for detailed analysis. Risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using the ROB2 assessment tool, and effect sizes for caries reduction were calculated using random-effects statistical models.
The following were the key findings:
- The analysis included data from 4,784 participants and found that Fluoride varnish significantly reduced the occurrence of Dental caries.
- Pooled results demonstrated a clear preventive benefit, with confidence intervals indicating a consistent reduction in caries development among individuals receiving fluoride varnish.
- The preventive effect was more pronounced among younger children and individuals with Xerostomia, a condition characterized by reduced saliva production.
- In these high-risk groups, quarterly application of fluoride varnish was associated with up to a 54% reduction in caries incidence.
- Adverse effects were minimal, with fewer than 5% of participants reporting any undesirable outcomes.
- The findings suggest that fluoride varnish is generally well tolerated and safe for routine use in preventive dental care.
The authors noted that there was some variability across the studies included in the analysis, as reflected by a relatively high heterogeneity level. This suggests that differences in application methods, frequency, or study populations may influence the observed effectiveness. The researchers suggested that adopting standardized protocols for fluoride varnish application may further enhance its preventive benefits.
Overall, the findings reinforce the role of fluoride varnish as a practical and effective strategy for preventing dental caries. The researchers concluded that incorporating fluoride varnish into community-based oral health programs could help address the substantial global burden of tooth decay, particularly among high-risk populations.
