Chronic Plaque Psoriasis Severity may Increase with Emotional Eating: Study
A recent study uncovered a significant association between emotional eating styles and the severity of psoriasis. The persistent inflammatory condition, psoriasis, has long been associated with various health issues where this latest research highlights the role that emotional eating play in influencing the development and seriousness of the disease. The findings were published in the journal of Dermatologic Therapy.
The cross-sectional study involved a total of 158 chronic plaque psoriasis patients, looked into the relationships between eating styles and the clinical severity of psoriasis. The comprehensive data including sociodemographic information, clinical presentation of psoriasis, risk factors, and treatment details was gathered through detailed questionnaires. The measurements such as body mass index and bioelectrical impedance analysis were included to assess the weight-related factors. This study by Wanjarus Roongpisuthipong and colleagues identified specific eating patterns and their impact on the severity of psoriasis.
The study found the significant association between the emotional eating style and an increased risk of psoriasis severity. When compared to the restrained eating style, the emotional eating style demonstrated a significant higher risk, precisely 3.9 times (with a 95% confidence interval of 1.52–9.81). Also, the factors such as body mass index, body fat mass, eating attitude, alcohol consumption, nail involvement, psoriasis treatment, smoking status, duration of sleep, and stress status did not emerge as significant risk factors for disease severity.
The findings suggest a compelling link between emotional eating and the severity of chronic plaque-type psoriasis in the Asian population. This opens the path for further exploration which helps incorporating cognitive-behavioral therapy as part of psoriasis management. Thus, this underline that emotional eating styles could be a potential factor to address and refine the treatment strategies in improving outcomes for individuals with psoriasis.
