Plain Paper Sticker Improves Accuracy of Infrared Imaging for Skin Lesions: Study

A recent advancement in dermatological diagnostics demonstrates that utilizing a customized plain-white paper sticker serves as an exceptionally effective, thermally inactive reference to accurately pinpoint tissue abnormalities during heat-based imaging without distorting the epidermis's natural heat emissions, as published in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal in February 2026.
Standard marker pens distort local skin temperatures during infrared (IR) imaging through physical pressure and evaporative cooling. To resolve this clinical gap, Bhattacharyya and colleagues from JIPMER, India, introduced a practical, thermo-neutral indicator to accurately correlate physical lesions with thermal scans without altering the skin's true physiological heat signature.
Therefore, in the novel diagnostic protocol, a customized plain-white paper sticker is applied to demarcate the target lesion and left to reach thermal equilibrium with the surrounding skin. To ensure optimal, artifact-free visualization without the thermal interference of traditional ink markers, the infrared camera is positioned strictly perpendicular to the patient at a distance of exactly 20 centimeters.
Key Clinical Findings of The Study Include:
Clear Demarcation: Innovators found that the customized adhesive's outline effectively highlights the exact area of clinical interest on the thermogram from a standard 20-centimeter observational range.
Thermal Integrity: Investigators noted that the carefully shaped paper does not interfere with or obscure the natural heat signature of the underlying and adjacent tissue.
Artifact Elimination: Researchers demonstrated that this method successfully negates the need for standard marking tools, thereby preventing artificial temperature alterations caused by liquid evaporation or physical skin compression.
Practical Simplicity: Authors highlighted that utilizing easily customizable, minimal-thickness cutouts provides an accessible, rapid solution for everyday dermatological imaging challenges.
The results suggest that incorporating plain-white paper adhesives serves as an optimal, temperature-stable reference point for the accurate heat-based mapping of various dermatological conditions. This straightforward yet highly effective procedural adaptation significantly improves the anatomical accuracy of diagnostic scans while strictly preserving the true physiological data of the patient's epidermis.
Thus, the study concludes that for HCPs and clinical specialists routinely utilizing thermal technology, adopting this easily accessible adhesive technique may gently offer a highly reliable and practical way to seamlessly correlate visual and heat-based scans in daily diagnostic practice without compromising measurement accuracy.
While the straightforward technique elegantly solves the immediate issue of mapping distortion, clinicians should softly note that thermal measurements must not be recorded directly over the indicator area itself to ensure absolute diagnostic precision, gently opening the door for future research into even more advanced, non-obstructive biomaterials for continuous body mapping.
