Diabetes Risk and the Family History of Disease Development - Dr Arijit Roy Chowdhury
Overview
The HbA1c test measures average blood sugar levels over several months, offering a comprehensive view of diabetes control. This test is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of management strategies. Maintaining HbA1c below 7% is essential, indicating well-regulated blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of complications such as heart disease and kidney issues. Regular testing aids in informed treatment decisions and prevention of long-term complications.
Contrary to the popular myth that not having diabetes in the family guarantees immunity, it's essential to recognize that diabetes can still develop. While family history is a risk factor, lifestyle and environmental factors also play significant roles. A sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary choices, and other health factors contribute to diabetes. Therefore, regardless of family history, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular health check-ups are crucial for preventing diabetes and promoting overall well-being.
In this video, Dr. Arijit Roy Chowdhary, Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at Helen Cross Diagnostics, Kolkata, discusses about the HbA1c test and it’s importance in treatment of Diabetes and confronting the misconception that one is not prone to Diabetes if no one in the family has it.
