Explainer video: Advise- Educating Patients about Addressing Glycemic and Weight Goals - Video
Overview
Talking about excess weight with people living with type 2 diabetes can be sensitive, but it is an important part of diabetes care. Evidence shows that modest and sustained weight loss of at least 5% of body weight improves glycemic control, blood pressure, and lipid levels. Greater weight loss, in the range of 10–15% or more, may even have disease-modifying effects. The ADA and EASD consensus reports highlight weight management as a key component of type 2 diabetes treatment.
Engaging patients in open, empathetic conversations about weight can help them see how weight loss connects not only to better blood glucose control but also to broader health outcomes and quality of life. It is essential to understand a patient’s weight history, assess their readiness for change, and set realistic, manageable goals together. Even small steps can empower patients, strengthen motivation, and improve overall diabetes management.
